Mistake #3 (Re: Advanced Readers)
“Advanced readers” read books before publication and prepare their reviews to coincide with the launch.
That’s the theory, anyway.
MY MISTAKE: Most of the people who (kindly and graciously) agreed to be my advanced readers for Sons of Adamah didn’t normally read science fiction. I should’ve asked. I gave out about sixty paperback copies and received perhaps ten reviews.
And to be fair, if you are a romance or horror writer, I’m not your advanced reader.
The good news is that I now have a small but expanding base of readers who love science fiction.
BONUS MISTAKE: My advanced readers needed longer than the six weeks I gave them: time to respond to the invitation, time to get around to reading the book, and time to craft the review. So, at least an eight-week window for future books.
