How to track book chapters

by | Dec 2, 2024 | For Writers

Revisions can leave some chapters too long or too short.

You are welcome to use my method to keep track, called “The Way of the Dinosaur.” [Note image of scribbles.] And we all know what happened to those cold-blooded reptiles.

The Triassic-Jurassic extinction event.

If you favour better odds of survival, you can try my colleague’s suggestion:

“Excel/Google Sheets/writing software can keep track of chapter lengths. Generate a table of contents in Word, copy it to the new file, then format the title chapter as ‘heading 1.’ Insert a table of contents at the beginning, and it automatically displays chapter numbers and page numbers. Best of all, it will update as page numbers change or ‘heading 1’-formatted chapter numbers are added.”

Let me know how that works for you. I feel a Triassic-Jurassic chill in the air.
